It was a cold day so I started out with a heavy coat. 2K down the trail, the wind was negligible and the coat came off and it was a pleasant day. The sign says 1.7K to Banff park boundary, and 18.3K to Banff townsite which is where I'm heading. The winding hill down to the Goat Creek bridge. It's steep, fast, usually with exposed rocks, and at the bottom you have to make a quick right turn to make the bridge. Still more cougar tracks
This is the sign at the Banff National Park boundary. The first 1.7K is never trackset, but is well-packed from skiers, hikers, and snowshoers. Cougar tracks There seems to be no end of them
Immediately after the boundary, the trail was trackset. Cougar tracks on the trail between Goat Creek and Spray River More evidence
About 3K down the trail, cougar tracks appeared. Bridge over the Spray River The trail was in great condition here, albeit with some fresh snow in the tracks.
Cougar tracks You'll see some of the most beautiful scenery in the world from the Spray River bridge It looks like I had a cougar running along each side of me
From the two sets of tracks it appeared to be a mother and this year's offspring. Heading up the hill from the Spray River bridge Now there's tracks going in both directions
In some places, both cougars walked in one ski track, helping to break trail for me in the fresh snow. 9.5K to Banff The conditions were excellent in this area
The cougars never went over a bridge, always around them. More cougar tracks Along the Spray River loop, the tracks had some debris and the snow was still thin in a few spots
The beginning of the descent to the Goat Creek bridge. Notice the cougar tracks coming out of the forest, and the others on the left. Disturbed snow at the side of the trail with cougar tracks leading in and out
